What is A/B Testing?

A/B testing (split testing) means sending two versions of an email to small groups, measuring which performs better, then sending the winner to everyone else.

What You Can Test

1. Subject Lines (Most impactful)

  • Version A: "New product launch announcement"
  • Version B: "You're missing out: exclusive early access"
  • → Send to 10% each, see which gets higher open rate
  • → Send winner to remaining 80%

2. Send Times

  • Version A: Tuesday 9am
  • Version B: Tuesday 2pm
  • → Compare open rates
  • → Use winner time for future campaigns

3. Content/Copy

  • Version A: Long, storytelling format
  • Version B: Short, bullet points
  • → Compare click and conversion rates

4. Call-to-Action (CTA)

  • Version A: "Buy Now"
  • Version B: "Claim Your Discount (Only 24 hours)"
  • → Compare click rate

How to Run A Valid Test

  1. Test one variable only (subject line, NOT subject + send time)
  2. Make the difference meaningful (don't test "Hello" vs "Hi")
  3. Split 50/50 (1,000 people each)
  4. Wait for statistical significance (minimum 100 responses per version)
  5. Give enough time (wait 24 hours before declaring winner for open rate)

Real Example: Nigerian E-Commerce

Subject A: "New winter collection available"
Subject B: "Zainab, these 5 dresses are perfect for you"
Result: Version B: 35% open rate (vs 18% for A)
Action: Use personalization in all future subject lines

Expected Improvements

  • Month 1: +5-10% improvement from testing
  • Month 3: +25-50% cumulative improvement
  • Year 1: 2-3x better performance than before
